It has been a very busy and productive Term 2 for our Gympie West State School students and staff.
Sports Day
Next week we have all our athletics events over a few days.
On Thursday the whole school will be participating in activities on the oval. Our P&C will be operating a food stall and a coffee van will be available. The program has been sent home to all families and will be published on Facebook.

We continue to inform you of your child’s progress with written report cards being sent out in Week 10. Please check your email and junk mail to ensure you receive your child’s report card. We invite you to contact teachers if you wish to discuss your child’s progress.
Year 5 Camp, Year 6 Reward Day, Pyjama Day
The Year 5 Camp and Year 6 Reward Day to Rainbow Bay have been thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. Everyone is excited to have our disco and free dress pyjama day next Friday (27 June) to celebrate our PBL achievements this Term!
Staffing Updates
Many of you are aware one of our long term staff Mrs Tarrant is retiring at the end of this term. Mrs Tarrant has been at GWSS for more than 25 years. She has taught many of our families and is held in high regard by our school community. On Wednesday, Mrs Tarrant will be our guest at parade and we invite families to join us as we recognise her service to our school.
Mr Widdon, Ms Rozynski and Mrs Biddle are on leave currently. Mrs Hooper will be on leave for the two weeks of Term 3.
Mr K is returning to our LOTE position for the rest of 2025. Mr Falconer will be teaching Health for Prep to Year 3 as Mrs Gosden is taking leave for Semester 2.
Mrs Thompson will be teaching 3R alternate Fridays for the rest of the year as Mrs Minns is also retiring.
We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break!
Yours in education,
Alana Scott | Principal

Calm In The Chaos – School Holidays
School holidays can bring a mix of joy, exhaustion, and pressure. Many families look forward to the break—but juggling work, child care, disrupted routines, and endless snacks can also feel overwhelming.
If you’ve felt pulled in multiple directions during the holidays, you're not alone. Many Australian parents report increased stress during school breaks, particularly when balancing employment and caring responsibilities (Baxter, 2013). It’s a tough season, and it’s okay to feel stretched.
Keeping it (mostly) together
Children naturally look to adults for cues about how to respond to big feelings and changes in routine. When adults can find moments of calm—even brief ones—it helps children feel more secure and supported, especially during unpredictable or overstimulating times like school holidays.
Research shows:
- Parental emotional wellbeing supports child development. The Growing Up in Australia study found that children do better socially and emotionally when caregivers offer warmth, patience, and structure—even during stressful periods (Australian Institute of Family Studies [AIFS], 2023).
- Stress impacts everyone differently. Parents under financial, emotional, or time pressure may find it harder to stay regulated. That’s completely human. What matters most is recognising your own limits and building small, sustainable coping tools (Low et al., 2019).
- Routines (even loose ones) make a difference. The 2024 AEDC data shows that children who struggle with emotional regulation often benefit from predictable environments—something families can gently support, even during school breaks (Centre for Community Child Health [CCCH], 2024).
- Connection helps calm. Research also reminds us that children don’t need perfection—they need connection. Even five minutes of focused time each day can support children’s wellbeing (Racine et al., 2024).
Here are a few low-pressure ideas that might ease some of the tension during the holiday juggle:
- Create a flexible rhythm: Try a morning and evening routine, even if the middle of the day is unpredictable. Visual planners can help younger children feel secure. A simple piece of paper separated into squares with words and hand drawn pictures will suffice.
- Tag-team when possible: If you share caregiving, plan breaks for each other—even if it’s 20 minutes of quiet.
- Give permission to lower the bar: It’s okay if not every day is Pinterest-perfect. Connection matters more than productivity.
- Take mini moments for yourself: Even short breathing exercises, a tea in the sun, or a podcast while folding laundry can give your nervous system a break.
- Name feelings together: Children may also feel the change of pace or miss friends. Saying “holidays can feel a bit funny” opens the door for them to talk.
In the chaos of holidays, it can be easy to feel like you're not doing enough. But simply showing up with care—imperfect, tired, and trying—is more than enough. Children don’t need you to be calm all the time. What they remember is how you come back to connection.
Parenting is a journey filled with ups and downs. If you ever feel overwhelmed or would like to talk through strategies, there are local support services available, including:
- Women’s Health Clinic
- Anglicare Family Support
- Refocus
- Gympie West School Services such as the Chaplaincy program, Out Of School Hours Care, Kindy LinQ, and MyTime for parent support
You’re not alone—and there is always support nearby.

Gympie District Athletic Trials
Our school athletics carnival will also provide students aged 10-12 years with the opportunity to be selected in the school athletics team, to compete at the Gympie District Athletic Trials in July.
Please note that qualifying standards and times do apply, so in some instances coming first in a race won’t necessarily mean the student will be selected.
Students who are selected to take part will receive information by the end of Week 1 of Term 3.
Sports Jerseys
A big thankyou once again to the P&C who have recently purchased new Gympie West jerseys for our juniors who attend Gala Days during the year. The students will certainly look very smart in these.
Report Cards
Report cards are due to come out next week. Physical Education results will be on these, if you have any questions, please let me know and I will endeavour to get back to you.
Until next time... Keep playing sport!
